Understanding the Causes and Finding Lasting Relief.

If you’ve been struggling with persistent dizziness, you’re not alone. Many people find themselves trapped in a cycle of frustration and symptoms with no clear way out. While dizziness can feel like a mystery, there is hope. This blog will explore why your dizziness may be lingering, what might be fueling it, and how to start breaking free from its grip.

Dizziness: A Complex Puzzle.

Dizziness that does not resolve, rarely stems from a single cause. Instead, it’s often a combination of factors that keep you feeling stuck. Understanding the factors that are relevant to your situation can empower you to take meaningful steps toward recovery.

Physical Factors

Our bodies and health are individual. Your personal health history can increase or decrease the likelihood that you will experience persistent dizziness. Medical conditions such as ear infections and even how you played as a child influence how your balance system developed and how well your nervous system copes with stress.

These physical factors from your past set you up for how you will respond in the present when your balance system is challenged.

How you are currently living and moving will also be part of what is keeping you dizzy. Being sedentary, if you avoid turning, bending or moving because of the risk of feeling dizzy, or you have eyesight problems - all can keep you stuck in dizziness.

Stress and the Nervous System.

Modern life is filled with stressors—physical, emotional, and even perceived. These stressors can overload your nervous system, putting it in a constant state of “fight or flight.” This state, while initially a survival mechanism, can perpetuate symptoms like dizziness if it becomes chronic.

Imagine your stress as a bucket. Every stressor, whether it’s poor sleep, health issues, or work demands, adds water to the bucket. When the bucket overflows, it manifests as symptoms like dizziness, anxiety, or brain fog. Taking steps to reduce stress can help empty the bucket and create space for healing.

The Vicious Cycle of Dizziness

Dizziness itself can act as a stressor. The more you focus on it, fear it, or try to fight it, the more you reinforce a heightened state in your nervous system. We call this hypervigilance. Hypervigilance fuels dizziness further, in a cycle of fear and dizziness. One ends up causing the other.

Personality Traits and Behaviors

Even our personality traits can determine how likely we are to experience persistent dizziness. Personality traits that put our nervous system into high alert make us more prone to dizziness. These include perfectionism, people pleasing, being a “fixer” or “analyser” or if you find yourself in constant problem solving mode.

These make you a great friend, spouse or work colleague but can leave you constantly dizzy as your poor nervous system is overwhelmed with all the demands you place on it.

You might also ( understandably) get very hung up on your dizziness, being hyper-aware of every tiny sensation in case you get dizzy, trying to figure out why you are dizzy and trying everything under the sun to find a cure.

We call this preoccupation and again this triggers your nervous system to be on constant high alert. These traits often play out as behaviours like having lots of rules and limits  to avoid dizziness “I can’t eat this” or “ I can’t go there” or “I can only manage…” “I don’t go out in the evenings” “I only…”

Sadly, all of these only reinforce the nervous system’s sense of alarm and keep your dizziness alive - the opposite of what you are trying to achieve.
